Writing Instruction
We will begin our year as writers by writing brief stories from our own lives in our Narrative unit. The students will learn to choose a topic, identify important details related to the topic, and retell the details in chronological order. We will follow the narrative unit with a unit on writing "How To" books. In this unit, the students will write a sequence of instructions for readers to follow. There is a strong focus on phonics and handwriting in the early part of the year, which provides a foundation for writing clearly and effectively as we write increasingly longer and more detailed pieces throughout the year. We will review the letters and sounds, including short and long vowels, begin to learn how to use spelling patterns to spell more accurately, and memorize the spellings of several common words that are used frequently in writing. |
